![]() In addition to this midrange complexity, bear in mind that your synth sound should also feature a solid, consistent low end to provide the bass's underpinning sub weight and power. Ultimately, the aim is to create an intricate, moving spread of mid and high frequencies with a sufficient balance of low-mid and mid-range harmonic movement that can then be 'magnified' and exaggerated with distortion, filtering and processing further down the chain. Instead, a good starting point is to use cutting-edge digital synthesis techniques such as wavetable, FM (Frequency Modulation) or phase distortion synthesis, all of which provide much more scope for creating unusual waveforms and harmonic complexity over time. This method is great if you're after clean, weighty sounds, but the end result will lack the timbral movement and aggression synonymous with dark-edged DnB. Hopefully some other people will stumble across this and learn something though. With traditional subtractive synthesis, you begin with basic waveforms - square, saw and triangle shapes, for example - before sculpting away harmonics with the synth's filter. Raise the limiter until it maintains form and clarity but the volume it brought up to a reasonable level. ![]() Compress it, and multiband compress following this guide. EQ out out the extreme lows and extreme highs. Mastering: I exclusively use the FabFilter plugins, I think they're amazing. Overall mix sits at -3db before I bounced to WAV to master it. ![]() Main bass is cutoff significantly below about 150 (I double it with the Sub Bass). Sub bass occupies area beneath and just around 100. Snare to 200, create a trough at about 100 to leave room for the kick. I EQ the kick the peak at 100, remove the mud at the bottom. The sound is amazing (or at least I think so) and you can create some real range in a sound, but you might want to create some troughs in your main EQ to stop it clashing with other sounds that are playing simultaneously though. Trick you should try that I fell in love with: Setup a new EQ like this and automate the frequency range of the trough/dip so that it glides up and down the frequency scale as the bassline plays. SeamlessR has some excellent tutorials on this, should come straight up with a YouTube search. In places, it's bounced to Harmor and then onto a sound file using Edison for extra Fx, width, distortion etc. The lead bass has 5 different parameters automated throughout the chorus, just to offer some scope. ![]() The synths all come from Massive, and then I automate a bunch of filters (usually the filter cutoffs and phasing work nicely) on the bass to create some more nuero-type movement.
